The Lakota people have a prophecy about the white buffalo calf. They have a sacred bundle, a sacred pipe, that was brought to them about 2000 years ago by the White Buffalo Calf Maiden.
She appeared to two warriors who were out hunting buffalo in the Sacred Black Hills of South Dakota. They saw a white buffalo calf coming towards them, and as it got closer, it became a young maiden. At that time, one of the warriors had bad thoughts in his mind about her, so the young Indian maiden told him to step forward. When he did, a black cloud came over him. When it disappeared, he was left with no flesh on his bones. She told the other warrior to go back to his people and tell them that she would return in four days with a sacred bundle.
The warrior did as she asked; He went back to his people and gathered them all in a circle, and told them what had happened.
In four days, she returned carrying the sacred bundle in her hand. As she entered into the circle of the nation, she sang a sacred song. She spent four days among them teaching them about the sacred pipe, and gave them seven sacred ceremonies. When she was finished, she again became a white buffalo and left them. She promised to return one day for the sacred bundle. It is called the White Buffalo Calf Pipe, and is kept today by Arvol Looking Horse on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
One of the prophecies she made is that the birth of a White Buffalo Calf would ba a sign that it would be near the time she would return to purify the world. This would bring harmony among the races.
